Artist Statement
Perpetually inspired by the spontaneity and uncertainty of all things, I like to work quickly.
I paint mainly with acrylics and just a handful of brushes so that nothing gets in the way of the fluidity and quick decision making of my process. This simple setup also forces me to experiment with technique – I often come back to the power of bold lines and colors, but also enjoy working in different mediums, exploring the power of texture layering and expressive brushwork. Found items also work their way into my art – from electrical tape to tree bark, nothing is off limits.
I’m naturally drawn to neo-expressionism and folk art. I find great inspiration in the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Nellie Mae Rowe, and Howard Finster. The ability to interpret the fleeting nature of the world with candidness and humor is the ultimate goal. Art is for everyone and I feel lucky to be a self-taught artist that is free to move across form and genre whenever I see fit.
Experimentation is so necessary in my process. My intent is to speak to the hearts and minds of viewers with pieces that please and even confuse on first sight. Most of my art is bright and playful, inviting the viewer to look around and spend time with the piece.
